The Community Archaeology project run by MBArchaeology on behalf of Creswell Heritage Trust has won Best Volunteer Project in the District of Bolsover for 2011. The award, given by Bolsover District Council, Community & Voluntary Partners (CVP) and the Bolsover Local Strategic Partnership, recognises the work undertaken in the community by the ‘Community Archaeological Investigation’ group, who have been carrying out work based around Whitwell and Elmton, both in north-east Derbyshire.
The second research article in the Local Heritage Series is now available online under the publications tab. An Analysis of Prehistoric Cave Burials in the Magnesian Limestone region of north-east Derbyshire by Matthew Beresford looks at the ritual deposition of human remains from the Palaeolithic through to the Iron Age and discusses the possible reasons for using caves as burial grounds in Prehistory.
MBA Local Heritage Series is published online by MBArchaeology in October each year and focusses on any aspect of archaeology or local history in the Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire region.
